PROTECT YOUR HOME AND CAR

The latest COPS Coffee presentation by PG County Police Detective Scruggs
reminded us of easy methods to protect your home and your automobile.
1.  Secure all windows with locks, pins or nails. Secure solid core doors with
double-cylinder deadbolt locks, especially if you have a glass panel within 48
inches of the locks. Do not leave keys in inside locks.
2. Doors which swing open should not have exposed hinges. Use a “hinge pinning” technique so burglars
cannot reach hinges.
3. Secure sliding glass doors with a “pinning” technique or use a pole to prevent door from sliding open.
4. When away, give your home an occupied look by having a few interior automatic lights on at night and leave a
radio playing.  Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your house, stop newspapers and US Mail, and arrange for lawn care.
5. Have at least one outside light on at night.
6. Don’t have any visible items in your locked car. Don’t leave garage door opener visible. Take GPS out of car and clean glass where
attached. Remember to keep your garage doors closed.
7. Ask for free home security survey by calling our District 6 Police Office @ 301-937-0910. Request Officer Jason Wilson, our
Community Officer, to do this 30 to 45 minute inspection.

IF YOU EXPERIENCE AN UNFORTUNATE BURGLARY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY. DON’T TOUCH OR CLEAN ANYTHING THAT WOULD PREVENT POLICE INVESTIGATION. SEND AN EMAIL TO THE COMMUNITY AND/OR THE SECURITY COMMITTEE SO WE CAN ASSIST.
