FBI Cyber Security Presentation

A group of about 50 South Laurel and West Laurel residents attended an excellent presentation by FBI Cyber Security Special Agent, Alex Dasilva, one of thirteen Cyber agents from the Baltimore Office. Some of his major points follow:
1. Some primary concerns are data acquisition, spyware, network observation, and wireless security.
2. Do not put personal date on social networks, ie. FaceBook, Twitter, etc. Identity theft is on the rise.
3. Paypal is secure but not totally safe. Nothing is really safe.
4. Phishing is widespread and can be obtained from social networks, resumes, and business cards placed in a bowl for drawing.
5. Shred all personal papers. FBI goes through garbage for clues. Criminals do the same.
6. Use passwords with alpha, numeric and symbols (@*). The longer the password, the safer the password will be.
7. Secure your home wireless Wi-Fi network. Do not use your name as an access code.
8. Don’t use internet for personal use when using public Wi-Fi.
9. Use UHL browser instead of google to avoid getting into an unofficial web site.
10. Mottos to live by: “SAFETY BEGINS WITH YOUR AWARENESS”, “DETER, DETECT, AND DEFEND”.
11. Web sites for additional information: “www.fbi.gov”, www.onguardonline.gov”
12. To avoid unsolicited e-mail requests for credit card and/or insurance information, call 888-567-8688 to opt out.
